Reflection

This type of activity is known as Demonstration. Please read the guidance notes here, where you will find useful information for running these types of activities with your students.

1. Demonstration

  • This file can be used to introduce students to the concept of reflection, or to revisit the concept for consolidation or revision
  • I usually start with the original image and one of the lines of reflection visible
  • I explain that I am going to reflect the object in the line
  • I ask students to write down the coordinates of one of the points after it has been reflected (e.g. point A) and/or draw a sketch of the reflected object
  • They share their prediction with their neighbour
  • We discuss as a class
  • I then reveal the shape by clicking the relevant checkbox
  • I can continue this process using the possible variations and questions below
  • The key is to not have too much information visible at any one time, and to ensure students always have the original image to compare the answer to

2. Possible variations

  • Vary the line of reflection (vertical, horizontal, diagonal)
  • Vary the position of the lines of reflection by dragging the point on the line
  • Vary the original shape by dragging the vertices
  • With the original object and the reflected image visible, ask students to predict what will happen if (for example) you move the line of reflection one square to the left
